Clarky’s Corner - January 2012

Isn’t it annoying when you fail to see what’s straight in your face. A few years ago I stopped my Shooting Star by the local chip van only to have it refuse to start on my return to it a few minutes later.
Pushing it home, I stripped out the timing, carb off etc. I got myself an impressive pile of bits on the floor. It was only then, while pondering the total mystery, did I spot the large air bubble in the fuel pipe… yep, fuel tank empty.
Well, having finally got my Norton back together following my Pushrod Performance disappointment, I couldn’t get the dynamo to charge. It was odd because it was fine when originally removed and would motor on the bench. I stripped the lacquer from the body, checked connections, tried independent earths, checked circuits, but it had me beat. I called in my wizard electrical neighbour Bob and it had him puzzled too, but he’s like a dog with a bone and eventually with the dynamo giving a good reading on the voltmeter when running on the bike, but not when connected into the system, it was blamed on the electronic regulator. A cup of tea followed. That’s when he noticed the D and F wires were the wrong way round in the dynamo… d’oh!
Happy New Year everyone
