The rule changes will apply to any motorcycle constructed or first registered more than 40 years ago which has not been substantially changed within the last 30 years.

This applies to re-registered vehicles that have lost their UK registration as well as to vehicles more than 40 years old which have been imported from abroad. Registration applications will need to be accompanied with a completed V112 form, available from the DVLA website, to claim the MoT exemption.

Claiming MoT exemption for already registered vehicles can be done online, or by post by sending a completed V112 form to the DVLA.

Owners who wish to get their bikes MoT tested, if only for their own peace of mind and any safety concerns, will still be able to do so, but the test will no longer be a legal requirement.

The new rules will not apply in Northern Ireland, where the government has not changed existing legislation.
