That Brough, at Bristol

The Carole Nash Bristol Classic MotorCycle Show always hosts some of Britain’s best classic bikes. This year there’s something extra-special on display at the Royal Bath and West Showground

THE COMBINATION OF TE Lawrence and Brough Superior has to be among the most famous partnerships in motorcycling history, and it’s one that will be celebrated at the South West’s biggest annual bike show.

There’s always masses of stuff to do at Bristol!

On the weekend of February 4/5, visitors to the Carole Nash-sponsored Bristol classic event get the chance to see the SS100 owned and ridden by the famous author and military officer who earned the moniker ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ for his role as a diplomat during Arab conflicts of the First World War.

Named ‘George VI’ by Lawrence, the bike registered as UL656 was used between January 1929 and 1932 and is one of just two Broughs which can definitely be identified as his. The other is GW2275, the motorcycle that Lawrence traded in UL656 to buy and on which he was fatally injured.

Apparently bought for him by friends – including George Bernard Shaw and his wife Charlotte – the Brough was Lawrence’s first sprung-framed SS100 and also the first to feature the 998cc JTO-series JAP V-twin engine.
