Bonhams at Bristol with rare barn finds (A list of highlights will be coming soon...)
Bonhams auction of Vintage and Classic Motorcycles at The Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show on 18th February 2012 was an outstanding success selling 96% by lot and 94% by value. The sale total was £316,231 – double the low estimate of £158,750. The top-selling lot of the day was a 1932 Brough Superior Black Alpine 680, which smashed its estimate of £28,000-35,000 to sell for £64,220.
Ben Walker, Head of Motorcycles, comments, “The sale result was a remarkable achievement, thereby proving it is possible to hold a successful auction at this event, as well as proving once again the power of the one-owner collection and realistic estimates.”
One of the highlights of the day was the Chichester Collection of over 50 'barn find’ and low mileage machines, which attracted many bidders. All the collection sold with many motorcycles selling for two, three or four times their pre-sale estimate. In fact, the percentage of lots sold in excess of their pre-sale estimate was one of the highest ever seen in a Bonhams auction. Mark Chichester commented: “What a show!! It was very professional and I for one was completely awe struck. Thanks you Bonhams for all you did.”
The Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show is a well known and much loved event that has been running for 32 years, and Bonhams was thrilled to be invited to host an auction there.
Other highlights of the sale included a 1955 Vincent 998cc Series-D Rapide (£27,600), a 1975 Ducati 864cc 900SS (£13,800), a 1938 Ariel 995cc Model 4G ‘Square Four’ & Sidecar (£12,075) and a 1947 Velocette 349cc KSS MkII (£9,775).

A message from our sponsor – Carole Nash
Traditionally we here at Carole Nash have seen the Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show as the opening gambit in the annual biking calendar. But this year we kicked off ‘up north’ at Newark’s new Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Show. Let me tell you, it was a cracker.
So has this upstart event taken the shine off Bristol? Not a bit of it. The two complement rather than compete with each other – and both provide a great platform from which to promote and support the classic bike movement. Oh, they also, of course, provide yet another excuse for classic enthusiasts to meet up, enjoy a bit of banter and admire each others’ machines. That’s why Carole Nash is delighted to support these and five other cracking national and regional classic events organised by your host today, Mortons.
And what a good host Mortons is too. This year, as with every other, the team has lined up a great cast, with a Bonhams auction among new attractions. It’s well worth checking out the lots as there are plenty of affordable and low mileage machines set to fall under the gavel.
I can think of few more civilised ways to while away a winter’s day than pootling around the Carole Nash Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show. Can you? This year we’re adding our own excitement to proceedings. Visit our stand to see how you could win not just up to £15,000 to buy a bike of your choice, but also £10,000 do it up. Now what could you do with a £25,000 project budget?
Have a great show.
